The year is still young and yet a lot has already happened in our “student town” Göttingen. While the pandemic is keeping us in suspense, physicist Professor Metin Tolan has been elected next President of the University of Göttingen. Also, as you already know, there are important changes coming up for Alumni Göttingen. We are happy about the many new members who have already joined the association.

In this newsletter you can find out more about an alumna and her foundation WissenWecken, about our international students who have received financial support during the pandemic thanks to alumni donations, the newly elected President Professor Metin Tolan, the development of an AI-based "moderator" for discussions in social media, the upcoming changes at Alumni Göttingen and the newly emerging museum Forum Wissen. Enjoy reading! You can find more news and stories from the university and from our partners on the Göttingen Campus in CampusPost. In times of Corona, the blog supplements our university newspaper uni|inform.

Stories of Our Students

"The alumni emergency aid was an enormous help!"
“I am very grateful for this emergency grant that helped me economically. It helped me to feel less stressed and to successfully fulfill my goals”, says Forestry student Micaela Cobo from Ecuador. One year ago, when the pandemic hit us all unexpectedly and hard, our alumni overwhelmed us with their support. We raised over € 90.000 for students in financial need due to the corona crisis and could quickly support numerous Göttingen students. The emergency aid benefited medical student Nancy Shehata from Egypt too and helped her to bridge a really difficult semester: "Especially during the pandemic its harder and harder to get a part time job." International students tell how valuable the emergency aid was to them. Read more

Insight into Research

Discussion and de-escalation in social media
It’s a familiar situation: a compelling discussion develops on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram – it could be about any topic – but instead of working constructively towards a common solution, the tone becomes increasingly aggressive. An international research team led by the #UniversityofGoettingen now wants to develop a "moderator" using artificial intelligence that can recognise hate messages in social media and intervene to de-escalate the situation. The Volkswagen Foundation will fund the project for four years from April 2021 with a total of around 1.5 million euros. Read more

What's going on in Göttingen?

"These are museums that are really fun"
Göttingen is the city that creates knowledge. But how is knowledge actually created? This question should be answered in the “Forum Wissen” of the University of Göttingen. The focus is not on research results, but on the process of creating knowledge. It should not be an ordinary natural science museum, but one that overcomes subject boundaries. The regional broadcasting channel NDR was on a visit and did a little inspection of the construction site with project manager Dr. Marie Luisa Allemeyer. Video in German
